Management of acute or chronic pain in patients with substance abuse and dependence requires expertise in both pain management and addiction medicine. In most cases, neither the patient’s primary care physician nor surgeon has the expertise to deal with their pain effectively and prevent relapse to drug use at the same time. We provide consultation in pain management to patients who are currently in treatment for substance abuse, in recovery or remission, and are contemplating surgery, after surgery or for acute pain due to injury.
